Day One:August 21, 2010

Standard
Hands and Feet Orphanage

I’ve just been awakened by my 730 alarm.  A solid five hours of sleep in a Miami airport hotel.  That was the best money spent!  On to the second part of my trip.  Today we’ll arrive in Jacmel.
I read a book on my flights yesterday on the history of Hands and Feet.  I was moved to tears multiple times and find myself a little nervous to face the levels of poverty I am about to see.  The stories in the book were all pre-earthquake so you can imagine how much worse the devastation will be now.  For the first time in this process I realize that God will be waking me up, allowing me to feel uncomfortable and challenging me to be his “hands and feet”.  Plain and simply, I’m frightened by that challenge!

Alarming Haiti statistics from 2005:
1.2 million children under the age of 5
1/2 suffer from malnutrition
more than 470,000 orphans
Many orphans are slaves or purposefully have their limbs broken so they are more convincing when begging for money
80% unemployment rate
Average family makes 400 US dollars/year

Hands and Feet must feel like heaven on earth to those children who have been fortunate enough to receive their care.  That said, let the challenge begin!
