Day 5: August 24, 2010

Standard

Today I mostly hung out with Mama Michelle (the hands and feet host.  We have a Michelle on our team too so the H & F Michelle I’ll refer to as Mama Michelle)
In the morning some of us had craft time with the preschoolers.  At 10am we went to the hospital to visit baby Sophia and her mother.  Sophia is so tiny and stopped breathing while we were there.  The Dr. was able to revive her but I wonder if she has the fight in her to survive.  Mama was in hospital for pneumonia and seems to have really labored breathing.  I’m really praying this family doesn’t lose both mama and baby.

We came back to the orphanage after the hospital and played games with the kids.  We played with rocket balloons, parachute, and water balloons.  All were a big hit with the kids but extremely exhausting for the adults.  This heat and humidity is absolutely brutal.  Michelle and I spent the afternoon taking a picture of each kid and corresponding it with their name.  We are hoping to put together a large poster for the volunteer house so other groups can learn the kids’ names.  With 47 kids it’s a daunting task trying to learn all the names.  The children must tire of each new group coming in and asking “what’s your name?” x12 people x7 days.  Answering that question must get very old.  We’re hoping this poster will lessen that monotony.
